Our Core Pillars

At Healing Schools Project, we believe in ending the teacher retention crisis—creating schools where educators feel valued, supported, and committed to staying. We are leading a movement to transform schools into communities of care that keep great teachers and elevate student success.

Retaining Teachers by Addressing Mental Health

Unaddressed stress and burnout drive teachers out of the profession, harming students in the process.

Building Community and Collective Care in Schools

We create a safe environment for teachers and leaders to talk about their experiences, and address potential barriers that may be preventing teachers from staying in the profession.

Driving Systemic Change

Our work goes beyond individual support; we partner with districts and institutions to address the root causes of teacher turnover and create lasting sustainable change.

Roots

Founded by a Black teacher, Wenimo Okoya, Healing School Project’s programs were centered around teachers of color; when programs are built around those furthest away from systemic privilege, everyone benefits.

Inception

The COVID-19 pandemic collective grief that followed pushed so many of us beyond our limits. Recognizing this wasn’t a new issue, Wenimo and founding team member, Ginelle Wynter, understood the need to address it. Ginelle and Wenimo took the initiative to organize informal virtual healing circles, providing a supportive space for their teacher friends and colleagues to cope.

Mission

We’re on a mission to make education a sustainable and life-affirming career for all. Through healing-centered programs, leadership development, and community care, we help schools prioritize mental health and wellbeing as essential to teacher retention and reducing burnout.

Vision

We envision a world where schools are places of healing, not harm—where educators feel safe, seen, and supported to bring their full selves to the classroom.

At Healing Schools Project, we’re not just helping teachers stay—we’re helping them thrive, so the next generation can too.
